Brown Bag Special

Region: Loy Canyon

Total Distance: 1 mile + 450’

Difficulty: Easy

ACA: 3Al

Duration: 1.5 - 2.5 Hours

Longest Rappel: 120’-175

Rope: 2 x 120’ or 2 x 175’

Anchor Materials: 20’ of webbing + 2 rapides

Driving Directions: Park at the End of Rope parking, just past Hartwell Canyon on your right, and before the Loy Canyon TH. There is an obvious pull off on the right side with a large dead tree to sit on for tour photos. This lot sees a lot of jeep tour traffic, please be courteous and leave room for others.

Overview: A very short but appealing route down a multi-tiered alcove system. The approach effort is very low, and the 1-2 rappels are more than worth it. The far-out location and short technical section wouldn’t make this a worthwhile option in itself but would be great paired with one of the nearby routes.

  • Luxurious alcoves

  • Quick & Easy

  • Good add-on or warm up route

Approach: Starting at End of Rope Parking, follow social trails toward the main approach gully. Cross over a small drainage and follow the gully up on the left side. As you work your way up the gully, Brown Bag will come into view on your right. Continue up the gully to the prominent rockslide. At the rockslide follow the track and traverse over to the start of Brown Bag.

Descent: Down hike through the drainage to a steep but easy downclimb of ~13’ on the right side. Locate the first rappel on the left down canyon side

R1: 120' off large pine to a big ledge or 175’ to the very bottom.
R2: 60' from a bolted anchor on a mildly exposed ledge located right down canyon. This anchor can be seen looking down from R1.

Exit: After the last rappel continue LDC hugging the Left wall and avoiding dense foliage. Continue Left down canyon until you reach the approach drainage. Reconnect with the social trail back to your car.
